Below are our clients' most frequently asked questions and the answers. Please contact us if you have an unanswered question or would like to chat about any aspect of our portraits.
Before we schedule your portrait, we’ll meet in person or have a video call to plan and design the perfect portrait session for you. If we’re on video, I’ll put on a very official—and admittedly slightly dorky—headset and ask you a few questions to get a sense for the personalities in your family, what’s most important for us to capture for you at this time and your preference for B&W or color. We’ve found that having this consultation before your portrait sessions makes ALL the difference in our results.
On your portrait session day, we welcome you to our historic destination studio, built in 1898!
Some families get dressed for their portraits in our changing room while others arrive ready to go. (This often depends on the ages of the children in the portrait.)
As soon as everyone is ready, we’ll create your portraits in front of a carefully chosen backdrop, hand painted and imported from Europe. We’ll pose and direct you so you know exactly where to put your hands and which way to look.
Then, to see your portraits, you’ll return to Lockhart for you ordering and selection meeting. More details about that special meeting are below.
We’re known for our B&W portraits but some of our clients prefer color and that’s completely within our expertise too. If you love color more than B&W, we’ll go over that in our consultation and we’ll plan your clothing and our portrait session accordingly.
Because phones can distract and impede the creative process, photos are not permitted to be taken by clients during any part of the actual portrait session or ordering appointment. Thanks for your understanding.
Your portrait session typically lasts anywhere between 30-45 minutes. We’re told the time flies by! Many families enjoy exploring Lockhart after their portrait sessions by indulging in some world-famous BBQ or eating at one of Lockhart’s Chef-led restaurants. Lockhart also offers fun local shops—both vintage and new—as well as a local café and a toy and candy store that children (and adults) love!
This is an extremely special part of your portrait experience with our Studio. One week after your portrait session, you return to the Studio for your cinematic portrait reveal and ordering meeting. This is a poignant and sometimes emotional time, when we review each of your portraits together with you, allowing you to experience and see the beauty of your family on our projection system. Jim and I will help guide you as you select your favorite portraits for your walls or to enjoy in an album or museum box. All orders are placed and taken care of at this meeting as on-line postings of images and printed proofs to take home are not available.
The reveal is often described as our clients’ favorite & most memorable part of working with us.
Jim and I are known for both our Black and White work and for our Hand Painted Portraits—original art pieces which combine the realism of a photograph and the exquisite beauty of an oil painting. We’re commissioned by clients who are looking for something different—an original work of art of that which is most important to them—their families.
Being our client is a bespoke and full-service experience. We delight in every portrait commission, serving each family from the very start with kindness and excellence as our guiding values, guaranteeing all of our artwork unconditionally.
We recommend waiting until your consultation to decide on and to finalize your outfits. We will work with you to help select the best clothing for your portraits. Most families prefer a formal, classic and timeless look for their Studio portraits, while others opt for a more casual feel. For either style, we can help you make choices that will photograph beautifully.
We do have a few suggestions…
- Ideally men will have haircuts 1-2 weeks before the portrait session and not immediately before. A close shave the day of the session is also recommended if applicable.
- For women, touching up hair color if needed is also ideal 1-2 weeks before the session.
- We do have incredible makeup artistry and hair services available to come to the Studio for an additional fee. Please let us know if you’re interested in adding these services and we’ll help to schedule them.
- We recommend simple manicures and getting a great night’s rest before your portrait session. Any additional time you invest in preparing for the portraits will pay off.
- Consider bringing your child's musical instrument, ballet costume or equestrian uniform. We’ll discuss these ideas and more prior to your session, during our phone/video consultation. We also provide our clients with a preparation guide that has more specific suggestions.
Most commonly, clients choose to hang their artwork in their dining room or above the fireplace in their living room where they will see it frequently. Others enjoy hanging their portrait where it can be seen as soon as they walk in the front door of their home.
Some of our clients who already have original art throughout their homes choose to display their portraits in the children’s bedrooms and playrooms, in their Master bedrooms, or in hallways dedicated to family portraits and family history, i.e. gallery walls. The stairway is also a popular option.
This is our goal as artists—that you love your portraits so much that it’s difficult to choose! That said, we’ll help you to make choices with confidence that are a great fit for your family.
At your selection and ordering appointment, you’ll be able to see your portraits projected to all of the actual available sizes which aids in your decision making. Our process and experience helps people to decide--even those who are more visual and who need to see something first before choosing it. (Yes, I’m the person who test patched 7 different shades of white on my walls before committing, so I get it!)
Before sharing your portrait proofs with you at your selection and ordering meeting, your portraits will have been prepared to reflect our signature style with light artistry.
Any portraits that you select and order will receive our Master Level Artistry, including complimentary additional modifications at your request to make your portraits even more beautiful and striking.
Past requests have included softening lines, stray hair removal, whitening teeth, filling in missing or crooked teeth, braces removal, “slenderizing” waists and arms, reduction of double chins, and adjusting clothing, etc.
Perhaps most important to keep in mind is that creating a portrait like this is a true gift for your children. We tend to see ourselves most critically while our children simply love seeing their family together. Family portraits are a nonverbal way of showing our children how much we love and adore them.
Over and over our clients share stories of their children’s reactions to seeing themselves and their families on their walls. Hearing these reports make me tear up and gives Jim “allergies!”
If you’re the parent who is always behind the camera, or if you dislike yourself in most pictures, please know that this will be a unique experience for you. We use our expertise in posing, which will help to create flattering portraits that are also authentic and that feel very “you.”
Yes, we do!
Studio Portrait Sessions are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays at the Studio by appointment.
Ordering meetings are held at the Studio on Wednesdays and Fridays, also by appointment. The Studio is closed Sundays and Mondays to spend time with our family and to recharge so that we can create amazing artwork of yours!
If you are married or partnered, both you and your spouse or partner will not want to miss this appointment!
In most relationships, both members have at least some input (either financial or aesthetic) in the selection process.
Our experience has shown that clients feel much more confident of their choices and decisions when they are made together. If one of you is unable to attend, please call to reschedule. It’s that important!
To help you in your selections, we project your portraits for you to see. This enables you to see them larger than life-size and to experience every detail. Then, once your portraits are narrowed down to your top favorites, they can be enlarged or reduced on our projection system to various sizes. You’ll literally be able to see your portraits the way they will look in each size.
Typically, one size resonates, moves you the most and feels right for you. Our unique process particularly helps people who are visual and who prefer to see something first before choosing it.
We’ve been commissioned by families from Fort Worth, Houston, Pearland, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and the Hill Country. We have a list of unique and fun places to stay in Lockhart and nearby.
Lockhart is a popular tourist destination. Over 2 million people come annually from all over the world to eat BBQ in Lockhart. The Main Square offers shopping, both vintage and new, amazing Chef led restaurants, craft cocktails, espressos, 2 art galleries, Texas’ oldest library and a toy and candy store that is a big hit with kids.
We offer an expedited ordering session for our out of town clients. If you are coming in from more than 100 miles from Lockhart, please let us know so that we can help to make special arrangements.
Many of our canvases are created in Italy or are exquisitely hand painted here. The frames we offer are also handmade in Tennessee and California.
We give our clients a time frame of 6 weeks up to 4 months for their artwork to be completed. For clients in Austin, Jim and I come to your home or office to install portraits that are 20 inches and larger. For out of town clients or smaller portraits, your artwork will be lovingly packaged and shipped directly to you.
If your home or vacation home holds special significance to you, have the portrait created inside your home or outdoors on your property. It can add sentimental depth to your portrait.
The Studio also offers a beautiful and timeless setting for your portraits. Jenn and Jim travel regionally, nationally, and internationally to create portraits, and will help you determine and select a location that is right for you and your family.
A Commission is a pre-paid fee to book the date on our calendar for your session that is then applied towards your artwork purchase. Commission fees vary by day of the week, location, type of session and number of people in the portrait. Please contact the Studio for details.
Feel free to call or text the Studio at 512.576.2889 and we will reply as soon as possible. Please note that we are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
